Making It Rain

This is my first entry as I am a brand new member of the network. I've noticed that some posts are simply copy and paste of other blogs and I kind of understand that because it's hard enough to maintain one blog. I'm going to try to keep my posts unique to this medium, and like any good blog, you won't see a lot of self promotional hype. My job is to make it rain for my propsects and clients and that works best by imparting whatever collective wisdom I can come up with, without thinking of how it may be reciprocated.

I blog regularly on the issues of Web 2.0, marketing and branding for real estate pros. Since this is a social network, I'd like to hear from other members about what keeps them awake at night in this regard. If i don't know the answer, you can bet I'll find it! So, check me out at http://www.mlpodcast.com/blog, and then come back here to fire off your questions!

Cheers,
Michael "Mike" Price

Mike,

The people who cut n paste don`t last too long. They are wasting our time, they leave faster than they appear..

Be yourself....Have fun and enjoy!!

Wow. I didn't expect to see comments that quick. I'm curious to hear about your experience with Active Rain thus far. What is the ratio of consumers to professionals? Have you been able to identify a return on investment for your time invested in it so far?

Hello,

I blog as a way of expressing myself. I love to share with my peers. I don`t count points as much as content and shy away from the Bloggers who are strictly in it for points, there blogs are mainly recycled news from other sources...

The concept of "points" is one of the things I want to explore in this investigative process. In the world of blogging, quality is king. There are networks like Digg and now Netscape, that are paying a great deal of money to woo prolific bloggers to post within their networks. They became prolific because of what they post, not because they did it frequently. Personally I think the points should be based upon the input of the community as a whole. In the end, the basis of incentive for frequency could taint the concept completely. I guess only time will tell, until then AR sure can generate quite a few page views this way. I just hope it doesn't turn into a bunch of self promotional spamming. If you look at the latest incarnations of web 2.0 directories etc., you will see that most have the opportunity for the user to rate the content they are interacting with. User generated ratings may be a better way to reward AR members. Just a thought.

Michael, I'm interested in branding and using it to eventually get clients.  I know some that do it well here in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  BUT, they also pay a price for it with all the exposure they receive.  I now have my branding on business cards, all correspondence, emails, and on my website.  Always a work in progress...

Christopher. By "paying a price" I am assuming the investment in $. Of course, you get what you pay for, however, you've established a good starting point by asking for help and networking in a meaningful way. With regard to your web site. It's REALLY busy. I finally found your logo after looking at the site for a while, and it's great. It needs to be the focus of the initial visual communication you are making with your client. I saw in the RealTalk listserv that there is a designer working with people to customize their point2agent web sites to improve them. Go to RealTalk.InternetCrusade.Com and joing the email list and post a request for that info.

Keep reading blogs, do some research outside of the real estate industry by reading Seth Godin, Guy Kawasaki, Chris Anderson's Long Tail is a must read as well. Adopt the old Apple tag line of "think different" - You'll get there!

Welcome to AR Michael, web 2.0 is still a relatively new concept to me, so I'll be happy to see what you've got, and I think you'll be a great addition here... but I'll have to bust on you first...

You went from "you won't see a lot of self promotional hype." to "My job is to make it rain for my propsects" to "So, check me out at http://www.mlpodcast.com/blog" in less than 100 words

Well, I guess it's not A LOT of self promotional hype.

My blog isn't a self promotionl effort either, I see active rain as an extension of the effort to network through imparting what I can into the community, If people click through and check out my company great, if not, I've still done something to help establish the brand. I don't even write posts about my own products on my blog, although it's quite tempting sometimes since it fits hand-in-glove with blogging and so many other Web 2.0 efforts. I don't mind being busted on, that's what I love about social networking and blogging, but I don't think this qualifies :)
